Rug Cleaning Mistakes You're Probably Making And How to Fix Them
Most rug damage doesn't happen from heavy traffic or spills. It happens from well-intentioned cleaning: the wrong vacuum setting, the wrong cleaning product, or the instinct to rub rather than blot a spill. Good intentions aside, these mistakes shorten the life of your rug faster than almost anything else.
Here are the most common rug cleaning mistakes Australians make and exactly what to do instead.
Mistake 1: Rubbing a Spill Instead of Blotting
This is the single most damaging thing you can do in the first seconds after a spill, and almost everyone's instinct is to reach for a cloth and scrub. Rubbing a spill spreads the liquid outward, pushes it deeper into the fibres, and, for wool rugs in particular, begins to felt the fibres together in a way that's permanent.
The fix: Blot. Always blot. Press a clean, dry white cloth firmly onto the spill and lift straight up. Work from the outer edge of the spill inward to prevent spreading. Repeat with a fresh section of cloth until no more liquid transfers. For wool rugs, follow with a small amount of cold water and a wool-safe detergent if needed, then blot again to dry.
Mistake 2: Using the Wrong Vacuum Setting
Running a vacuum with a rotating beater bar over a wool rug or jute rug is one of the most common causes of premature fibre damage. The spinning brush aggressively pulls at natural fibres, causes pilling, and loosens the rug's weave structure over time. It can cause visible damage within just a few cleans.
The fix: Switch to suction-only mode, no rotating brush. For natural fibre rugs especially, a gentle suction pass in the direction of the pile is all you need. Vacuum weekly but gently. If your vacuum doesn't have a suction-only option, use the upholstery attachment instead.
Mistake 3: Soaking a Natural Fibre Rug With Water
When a jute rug gets wet truly saturated- it can develop brown water stains as the natural tannins in the jute migrate to the surface. It can also develop mould if it doesn't dry quickly enough, particularly in humid Australian summers. Many homeowners discover this the hard way after attempting a DIY deep clean.
The fix: For jute rugs, keep water use minimal. Spot clean only, using a barely damp cloth and working quickly. For wool rugs, you can use slightly more moisture but always ensure the rug dries fully within 24 hours; lay it flat in a well-ventilated area or outdoors in indirect light. Never leave a damp rug folded or rolled.
Mistake 4: Using Harsh or Incorrect Cleaning Products
Bleach, all-purpose household cleaners, and high-alkaline products can strip natural dyes, damage wool fibres, and leave a residue that actually attracts more dirt over time. Enzyme-based pet stain removers, while excellent on hard floors, can be too aggressive for delicate natural fibre rugs.
The fix: For wool rugs, use only pH-neutral, wool-safe detergent diluted in cold water. For jute rugs, avoid liquid cleaning products altogether where possible dry-cleaning methods work best. When in doubt, test any product on a small, hidden corner of the rug before applying it to a visible area.
Mistake 5: Skipping Professional Cleaning Altogether
Regular vacuuming removes surface dirt, but it doesn't remove the grit and fine particles that work their way deep into the rug's foundation over time. This embedded grit acts like sandpaper with every footstep, slowly cutting through the fibres from within. It's invisible until the damage is done.
The fix: Have your rug professionally cleaned every 12–18 months by a specialist who understands natural fibres. It's an investment that pays for itself many times over in extended rug life. For hand-knotted or handmade rugs, always use a rug specialist rather than a standard carpet cleaner.
