How to Style a Rug in Your Bedroom: Simple Tips That Make a Big Difference

The bedroom is the most personal room in the house, the place you begin and end every day. Yet it's also the room most Australians under-invest in when it comes to styling. A well-chosen, well-placed rug is one of the fastest ways to transform a plain bedroom into a space that feels genuinely designed, warm, and luxurious. The good news? You don't need to redecorate the entire room. You just need to get the rug right.

Step 1: Nail the Placement

Placement is everything in a bedroom. Unlike a living room — where the rug must accommodate an entire seating arrangement — a bedroom rug has one primary job: to create a soft, warm landing when you step out of bed in the morning.

Three placements work, and one that doesn't:

  • Two-thirds under the bed (most popular): Slide the rug under the bed so it begins roughly one-third of the way up from the foot of the bed, extending 50–60cm past each side. This frames the bed beautifully from all angles and gives you that soft landing on both sides. It's the look you see in every hotel room that makes you immediately feel at ease — and it works just as well at home.
  • Foot-of-bed placement: The rug sits entirely below the foot of the bed, extending out into the room. Works well in smaller bedrooms where sliding a large rug partially under the bed isn't practical. Choose a rug that's at least as wide as the bed, ideally wider.
  • Two runners, one on each side: A pair of matching runners placed along either side of the bed creates a symmetrical, boutique-hotel feel. This works particularly well with king beds and in bedrooms with beautiful floor surfaces worth showing off.
  • The one that doesn't work: A small rug centred at the foot of the bed, not touching the sides. This looks like an afterthought. Always go wider.

Step 2: Choose the Right Size

Bedroom rug sizing is more forgiving than living room sizing, but the rules still apply: too small always looks wrong.

  • Queen bed: A 160 x 230cm rug is the minimum. A 200 x 290cm rug gives a more generous, luxurious feel.
  • King bed: Step up to a 200 x 290cm or 240 x 340cm rug. Alternatively, use two 80 x 300cm runners, one on each side.
  • Single or king single: A 120 x 170cm or 160 x 230cm rug placed at the foot of the bed works well.

Step 3: Pick a Material That Feels as Good as It Looks

In a bedroom, you're barefoot. Material choice matters more here than in any other room.

Wool rugs are the ultimate bedroom choice, naturally soft, temperature-regulating, and beautiful underfoot first thing in the morning. A hand-tufted wool rug with a plush pile feels genuinely indulgent and suits both contemporary and traditional bedroom styles.

Jute rugs suit bedrooms with a natural, coastal, or Hamptons aesthetic. Their warm texture and earthy tones add organic character that pairs perfectly with linen bedding and timber furniture. Just note that jute has a firmer texture than wool, so if you love the feeling of sinking your feet into something soft, a wool-jute blend or pure wool will serve you better.

Step 4: Colour and Pattern — Let the Bed Lead

In a bedroom, the bed is the star. The rug should complement it, not compete with it. If your bedding is patterned, choose a rug in a solid or subtly textured neutral. If your bedding is plain, a rug with a gentle geometric or traditional pattern adds visual interest without overwhelming the space.

Warm neutrals, oatmeal, sandy beige, soft ivory, warm grey work in virtually every bedroom and create a calm, restful atmosphere that pure white or bold colours can't match.
